Miller Mentorship

Summer program

What is the Miller Mentorship?

NYAGV Ed Fund’s Miller Mentorship program works with a committed class of teens, meeting over seven weeks during the summer to take a deep dive into the intersections of race, gender, the pandemic, and gun violence. Mentees, who receive stipends for participating in the program, have the opportunity to participate in press conferences and lobbying meetings, attend field trips to relevant museum exhibits and engage with our Youth Over Guns leaders and other mentors.

The 2020 mentorship program took place virtually as the nation erupted in protest over the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and so many others due to unaccountable policing. Our conversations explored policy solutions for addressing gun violence as a public health issue and how the prevalence of firearms exacerbates the systemic inequities inherent in our criminal justice system. We will be recruiting our third class of Miller Mentorship students in late spring/early summer 2021; if you’re interested in participating, contact us!

"Having that feeling that there are people listening to you, and at the same time, not judging you - it’s a really good feeling. "

" We’re the ones experiencing all this trauma, so why shouldn’t we be the ones to speak about it, from our perspective? "
