Assistance Program
If you or someone you know was hurt or passed away due to gun violence, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence is available to support you. The Survivor Support program assists youth, adults, and caregivers who have been affected by gun violence related crimes in New York City’s five boroughs.
Through funding from the New York State Office of Victims Services (OVS), a survivor advocate on staff is prepared to assist with any of the following needs:
- Direct social and emotional support
- Assistance with immediate needs (housing, food, clothing, etc.)
- Inform you of your rights according to New York State
- Discuss whether you qualify for OVS compensation, which may cover
- Gather documentation and walk you through the application process
- Refer you to longer term support services

Who is eligible for victim’s compensation?
According to the Office of Victims Services, certain crime victims may be eligible for compensation after health insurance and worker’s compensation are completely used. You may qualify under the following circumstances:
- You were the victim of a crime occurred in New York State
- You were physically injured as the result of a crime
- You are the parent/guardian of a child who was the victim of a crime
- You paid for or incurred burial costs of the victim of a crime
- You are the spouse or dependent of someone who was the victim of a crime
- You are a child or older adult who was affected by or witnessed a crime
What does compensation cover?
- Medical expenses or other related services that are not covered by other insurance programs
- Funeral expenses, covering up to $4,000
- Lost earnings or loss of support up to $600 a week, not to exceed the maximum of $30,000
- The cost of repair or replacement of essential personal property lost, damaged or destroyed as the direct result of a crime, up to $2,500. A maximum of $100 in cash can be replaced
