We are sending our warmest thoughts to you and your family during this global Covid-19 crisis. Our highest priority is the public’s health and safety and these are deeply distressing times.

Additionally, we wanted to give you a brief update on NYAGV’s programming, now that many schools have closed throughout the state and country. Our ReACTION program serves the students in New York City who are particularly vulnerable right now, and our Youth Over Guns arm similarly works with young people in underserved communities. With school in flux, we know that millions of children and teens are missing out on essential education, services and mentorship.

NYAGV and Youth Over Guns participate in a virtual workshop.

That’s why, starting this week, our education program team is partnering up with Youth Over Guns to pilot a virtual support group for our ReACTION students. As the situation develops, we will grow the sessions to include as many ReACTION students as possible in the weeks ahead. We will also continue to coordinate with New York City’s Department of Education, the Mayor’s Office to Prevent Gun Violence, and our violence prevention community partners to uplift our communities.

We’ll be candid: There are challenges ahead for our students. A parent’s health crisis could mean a total lack of income, a gap in education can be devastating to future plans, and any rise in violence that may accompany this crisis will hit our neighborhoods first. We at NYAGV and YOG are committed to providing a source of stability, safety and strength for the students we serve.

We thank you for any support you can give to these critical programs as we all stand together through this difficult time.
